Sustainable Preparations for a Greener Back to School

Sustainable Preparations for a Greener Back to School

As the new school year approaches, it's a chance to embrace eco-friendly habits for a more sustainable start. Prioritize sustainable school supplies like recycled paper, eco-friendly notebooks, and pencils from sustainably sourced wood (look for certifications that ensure sustainable foresting practice).

Reuse last year's items whenever possible and consider upcycling to give them a fresh look.

Buy used uniformChoosing pre-owned uniforms extends the lifespan of clothing, reducing the demand for new production and decreasing textile waste. It minimizes the resources, energy, and water typically utilized in the manufacturing process of new garments. Additionally, buying used uniforms often supports a circular economy by promoting the reuse of clothing, contributing to a more eco-friendly and sustainable approach to clothing consumption.

Choose reusable lunch containers and water bottles to reduce single-use plastics in lunch gear. Encourage waste-free lunches by packing food in reusable containers and choosing locally sourced produce to minimize packaging. When it comes to clothing, opt for sustainable and ethically produced items made from organic or recycled materials.

Promote walking, biking, or using public transport to reduce carbon emissions from daily commutes.

Encourage digital learning materials to minimize paper usage and support environmental education initiatives within the school. How many times  have your school last year asked you to print out the homework? In my experience this happened too many times. Sometimes its worth reminding the school about their own sustainability commitment.

Teach students about energy-saving practices, like turning off lights and unplugging devices when not in use.

Encourage eco-friendly projects such as school gardens, recycling drives, or community cleanups to instill a sense of environmental responsibility in students.

Embracing these practices fosters a culture of sustainability, shaping a brighter, more eco-friendly future for all students.
